543,000+ monthly visitors with a DA of 3!?

Yesterday, I found an online tool site with some eyebrow-raising numbers.

It was launched in January of this year.

It has a Domain Authority of 3.

Yet, monthly traffic is at 543,000 (and rapidly growing) according to SimilarWeb. The primary traffic source is Google organic.

The site is mathda.com.

The vast majority of traffic goes to this scientific calculator page.

The main keyword driving this traffic is “scientific calculator online” (and its variations).

It doesn’t even rank in the top three (and there’s a Google calculator at the top), yet the search volume is high enough, and there are enough high-volume keyword variations, that any site ranking on the first page will get some serious traffic.

How is MathDA doing so well, so quickly?

I believe one reason MathDA is doing so well despite being less than a year old and having a very low domain authority is because of the user experience.

It looks a lot nicer than the other calculators ranking above it, and it provides account functionality which allows users to see their calculation history, save their settings, and use more advanced features.

Having a superior user experience compared to competitors can also lead to higher rankings because Google looks at user signals when determining page quality. If people are engaging with MathDA’s calculator more than other calculators, or “pogo-sticking” down the results page until they land on MathDA, that would be a huge quality signal and would help explain why the site is doing so well for its age.

There’s a lesson here

Offer a better user experience compared to your competitors.

Doesn’t matter what type of site you have or how young or “low authority” it is.

If users stick around on your site and engage with it more than competing sites, that’s a quality signal to Google and will help you rank higher (all else being equal).

Next time you build a website, think of a way to make your site considerably better than the competition. I know, I know. That’s old advice. But I’m repeating it because almost no one truly follows this advice.
